"Afterwards"

Lyric by Mariana Noble

Music by Tom Sperrazzo 1982

She listens to the night wind
Sweeping through the trees;
And looks down at her lover
She tried so hard to please;

He slips away, embracing sleep,
His only trusted friend;
And just when she's holding him
She's lost him again;

She knows she's been abandoned;
What she doesn't know is why;
But she cradles him again tonight
When his dreaming makes him cry;

She never meant to hurt him,
It just turned out that way;
Now she watches for the sunrise
To take him away.

The corners of the room
Are blurry in the dark;
She slowly strokes her arm
Where his fingers left a mark;

She lights another cigarette
And lets the ashes fall;
And careful not to wake him
Turns her body to the wall.
