"The Guy I Am"
Music and Lyrics by Tom Sperrazzo 2026
Overheard in the hotel bar:
Two drunks yellin: "Who the blank do you think you are?"
And that got me thinking, mind running free:
What does anybody think of me?
Well, I've never been one for crowds;
My head is always in the clouds;
I really don't intend to be a loner;
Though I admit..I'm a lousy telephoner;
So when you see me off to the side
It's not snobbery, airs, or pride..
Some might think "He don't give a damn.."
But it's just the kind of guy I am.
You wouldn't say that I'm a man's man
If you knew that I'm an opera fan;
No fancy cocktail would entice me
My drink's an Arnold Palmer iced tea.
Who cares for fishing in Bolivia?
I'd prefer an edgy game of Trivia;
As for football, I know next to nada;
Gourmet for me's an enchilada;
Socially speaking I'm a misfit;
At double-dating I could never pinch-hit.
Couldn't give a rip about cigars or cars,
Nor gentleman's bars or entertainment stars;
As for women, I'm sure I'm a cipher,
But in the Jigsaw club, a certified lifer;
No college nights spent cruising Ensenada,
I was at the library digging Duchamp and Dada;
Binge on Bonanza or the Rifleman;
That's the kind of guy I am.
Don't call me catatonic!
'Cause I love the philharmonic;
I prefer Count Basie to Madonna;
I'm proud to say that Truffaut is my genre;
Myers Briggs says I'm a true phlegmatic;
Give me Sherlock Holmes and I'm ecstatic;
Well, I'm not sure how it began;
I grew up an odd-ball man;
That's why my nameplate epigram
Says "That's just the kind of guy I am."
