"Why Didn't You?"

Words & Music by Tom Sperrazzo, 2026

Joyful childhood, the sweetest days--
A time oh, so dear!
A show'r of kisses from my lovely mother
Lightened every bruise and tear;

Growing older, my thoughts ran deep;
A picture not so clear;
Some hidden difference with my sis and brother
That would flash then disappear.

Lookin' in the mirror at a girl with mournful eyes,
Nothin' like the mother that I'd come to idolize;
So I asked "Where had I come from?"
With tenderness she told a tale
That struck me dumb.

"I know she never meant to hurt you.
We chose to add you to our family
And to love without distinction."

The last untangling tactic that I tried--
Putting all the puzzle's pieces side by side;
Just too much for coincidence;
I'm missing the connection that would make some sense.

You must have thought about the future;
Why didn't you? Why didn't you?
You could have saved me from the heartache years
Of wond'ring where I came from;
Why didn't you? Why didn't you?
